Washer , Denise & Felix How often have you looked up at the Sentinel guarding proudly over Hout bay and wondered what it would be like to stand up there and look down. You probably think that its impossible to get up there.. but you would be wrong! The truth is its only an hours walk with some very minor rock scrambling and you're on the top of the world ! And let me tell you that it is spectacular up there with the sheer drop on the east side being simply breathaking. Unfortunately even this proud guardian of Hout bay has not being spared the wrath of Cape Town's fires and was recently badly scarred, making the path somewhat difficult to follow in places. But there is only one direction - up ! and enough rocks to scramble over so as not to disturb any vegetation that was spared by the fire. A cold beer at dunes looking up at the conquered peak is the best way to celebrate this unique experience.

Washer I usually reserve Nursery Ravine for descending Table Mountain but thought that it would make a nice change to ascend via this route for a change. Basically its like one big stair case, with beautiful decor mind you, but its pretty tough going nevertheless. I started early which was a good thing as it got real hot later that day( Always a good idea to start summer walks early in the day to avoid the hottest part of the day). Anyway while resting at the top of the Ravine I encountered Harry and Dave and the boys from Khanyisa Church in Guguleto on an outing - some outing ! But good to see so many young people enjoying the mountain and outdoors. Well done guys lets see you on the mountain again soon.

Washer with the Ramblers I once again joined The Ramblers for a Sunday morning hike. This time we scrambled up Nursery Buttress which involves some fun B-grade rock scrambling and plenty of stops when ever some shade presented itself. It was an extremely hot day but the spirits of the 12 people walking where always high. We finally reached the top and while resting under this huge rock overhang we were summoned by Colin to explore this great cave he had found. We continued on, spotting rare blue Disas along the way as well as a few left over Red ones. After a well deserved lunch break we started our return trip. We descended via Cecilia Ridge and started making our way back to the starting point at Cecilia Forest. I parted ways with the ramblers at the Kirstenbosch sign and went to the gardens to watch the 5:30 sunsetter concert, always a nice way to end a day on the mountains. So thanks again to Urs and the ramblers for another fun day on the mountain. Check out the ramblers web site at www.ramblers.org.za

Washer, Denise & Felix (the dog) +/- 3 hrs Our original intention was to climb to the top of the Karbonkelberg but along the way we encountered some "left-overs" of a fire that had burnt their the previous day. As some sections were still burning and the threat of the fire spreading still existed we decided to be prudent. So we called the Hout Bay fire department, told them the fire was still smouldering in places and made our way down to Seal Island. On our way down we encountered a fire truck on its way up to put out the still smouldering parts of the mountain.Well done to the Hout Bay fire Department who also phoned me back to tell me they were tending to the problem. We proceeded to Seal Island which is pretty easy to get to and had a great swim in the very refreshing Atlantic. We considered climbing the Sentinal but due to the heat decided to put it off for a cooler day. So the day didn't turn out quite as expected but then again, when does it ever?
